TRAIN SAGA TO VIETNAM
Hanoi, Vietnam

Wong How Man traveled by train from Kunming to Hanoi, with beautiful scenery but officials need to improve their attitude to foreigners to promote tourism. Besides having his vacation, he was there to discuss possible future collaborations and conservation projects along China's frontiers with Vietnam. He left Hanoi with one consolation - the government is eager to collaborate.

WINTER PILGRIMAGE TO MOUNTAIN DEITIES

October is the best month of travel for Tibetan pilgrims to the three deities of Konkaling but November is hopeless. Wong led his team, took eight days, included six full days on horseback and another three days getting back to Longdu, the village where they started, (one additional day on a truck) and achieved our goal - pioneering a new route up to the sacred mountains. Getting out of Longdu is not simple, it took us four days and numerous trials to cross the pass with the help of the " East Is Red", the friendly bulldozer they had hired to brave the snow in front of their Land Rovers.

CORNER SUITE AT TIBETAN WINERY
Longdu, Zhongdian, Yunnan

Wong How Man led his team to attend a " pristine" Tibetan wedding in Longdu, a Tibetan town in northwestern Yunnan, six hours driving from Zhongdian. In the field, How Man likes to call his warm sleeping bag, " the suite". When stay in the room, he always chooses " the corner" such that he can create an environment with all his belongings laid out and a presiding view of his team around him. On this expedition, they'll try a new route up the three sacred mountains of Konkaling, several days away on horseback.

ALI BEG AND THE FORTY THIEVES - A CHAPTER IN KAZAK HISTORY
Dunhuang, China

A story about how Ali Beg and the forty thieves became the 3000 Kazak community in Aksay from early 1951. Between 1995 to 1998, CERS conducted several wildlife surveys in the Qilian Mountains within Aksay County. In late August this year, Wong returned as Advisor to Aksay to hold discussion of a new project. With the opening up of tourism in Aksay County, much impact may result. CERS intends to help plan and build birdwatching facilities as a way of educating future travelers to the remote county on the preservation of our natural heritage.

LAST TIGERS EXPEDITION
Hong Kong

The author spent all day with Jane Foster Hanks, age 84, who was a nurse for the Flying Tigers (American Volunteer Group) which came to the aid of China during the Second World War. WILDLIFE PARADISE
Mankam, Tibet

A flock of twenty-five Blue Sheep, dozen or so Tibetan Snowcocks, about ten Sichuan Monal Patridges, plenty of huge White Eared-pheasants, also Blood Pheasants. Besides the mentioned rare species, there were many other animal around and a large variety of birds. Birds and animals were easy to attract and feed. They are all here in this remote monastery, Nienguo, high on the plateau at the altitude of 4250 meters. Nienguo is exceptional in the closeness between man and nature.

FRONTIER WITHOUT BORDER
Kunming, Yunnan

Wong and his team drive towards the Burmese border with an official from Ruidien, who heads the local Village Congress and has been living in the area since childhood. He has seen many disturbances on the Burmese side throughout the years, but the Chinese side of the border has been exceptionally stable. No security papers nor visas were needed as they entered Burma.

AN UNDERGROUND AFFAIR
Tengchong, Yunnan

On Valentine's day, Wong and his team embarked on a new-found underground affair. Around the many volcanoes of Tengchong near the border with Burma are perhaps one of the most extensive networks of underground caves in China that are formed by volcanic action.

VOLCANIC VALENTINE
Tengchong, Yunnan

When Wong went to one of the groups of volcanoes at Majan, the local Government has recently constructed a mile-long boulevard for visitors to go up to Daikungshan and the entire way is decorated with volcanic rocks and a long line of electric lights. As he hiked, he could hardly stop cursing the ravaging hands of the designer and the official who approved of such concept of massive destruction to one of the rare geological and scenic areas. Personal beauty may only last a lifetime and appreciation of artistic beauty may only be as long as our educated culture. But scenic and geological beauty stretches our sense of imagination into our planet's distant past.

CHINA AND LAOS
Luang Prabang, Laos

As part of Millennium plan, CERS intend to select small but important conservation projects along China's frontiers. The trip into Laos is part of that plan. Wong found Laos to be perplexingly slow-paced and peaceful. Perhaps due to the lack of material goods, theft is almost unheard of. He wonders whether such honesty can be preserved through a trans-border project and be taught to the Chinese side.

CHRISTIAN AND BUDDHIST INTRIGUES ON THE ROOF
Lijiang, Yunnan, China

Over the last few years, CERS has made several visits to the Christian churches at Weihsi, Tsechung (Qizhong) and Yerkalo (Yenjin). While visiting the Qizhong church as part of our Millennium Expedition, our team witnessed a Tibetan wedding, the bride is Buddhist and the groom, Catholic. This joyous event inspired us to begin a twin project in preservation, one to restore the Catholic church and the other, to assist a nearby Buddhist nunnery. Both are important heritage of the region.

FAST TRACK TO HEAVEN - Mockery of the Sacred Mountain
Deqen, Yunnan, China

In January 1991, a fully equipped Japanese climbing team made an assault on the peak of Khawakarpo. It was believed that one of the frequent avalanches must have hit them and the team perished. Locals believe that the sacred spirit of Khawakarpo should not be violated as it sends climbers on a fast track to heaven.

MILLENNIUM OUTLOOK
Mekong/Salween Watershed, China

Should we begin to look at our infinitely short life as a tiny speck within the natural world around us, much of our problems may seem more trivial. With such notion, we may become enlightened and peaceful solution may then manifest itself.

MILLENNIUM MESSAGE
Mekong/Salween Watershed, China

A mountaineer sees a mountain and climbs to the top. He comes back with a sense of conquest. An explorer sees a mountain and scales it, he wants to find out what is beyond. On the mountain, he also finds satisfaction, but only momentarily, as his journey and quest for knowledge continues.
